| NIDB HOUSE COLLAPSES DUE TO FIRE |

The poor standards in the nation’s built environment have been attributed to the high incidence of building collapse. The recent collapse of the Nigeria Investment Development Bank (NIDB) House on (22nd March 2006) has presently caused many to wonder about the safety of high-rise building, especially in Lagos.
Investigation revealed that the property had existed without functional fire- fighting systems in the last twelve years. This was the third fire incident on the building hence, the weakened structure, causing it to collapse with effort of the heavy rain. Most high-rise building in Lagos are susceptible to fire. In spite of this the preparedness to fight it is neither adequate nor are there fire fighting professionals to work. The need to engage the services of a professional in the design and build of a property- high-rise, to achieve high standards of design need not be over -emphasize.
